Twitter reacts to Burgess' debut

Sam Burgess made his hotly-anticipated England rugby union debut on Saturday as France came to Twickenham.

The league convert is desperate to earn himself a World Cup place and all eyes were on the Yorkshireman.

His switch from the 13-a-side code has not been without criticism but if Twitter is anything to go by, tonight was the night he won people - well some of them - over.

"Good 1st half by England. Slade & Watson have been phenomenal. Burgess has been immense and Goode & May have been solid in defence." - Women's World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi enjoyed Burgess' show.

"Wow. Burgess an Slade looking a potential world class combo so far." - So did Mark Cueto.

"I hope #slade and #burgess are given a full 80 together I'm enjoying them as a unit." - Ex-England captain Lewis Moody.

"Well done @EnglandRugby , well done @SamBurgess8." - Burgess' former boss at the South Sydney Rabbitohs - the Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe.

"There was no way Stuart Barnes was gonna give Sam burgess man of match. He just can't handle that league players can play kick and clap." - Ex-Warrington playmaker and former league opponent Lee Briers felt Burgess should have been rewarded by commentator Stuart Barnes.

"I think the Sam Burgess yellow card could be a deciding factor for RWC inclusion." - 2003 World Cup winner Matt Dawson feels Burgess' sin binning could haunt him.
