Former England Saxons forward Jon Fisher is to step back from playing after suffering a head injury in December.

The Bristol player was hurt during a European Challenge Cup game against French club Pau, and he has not played since.

And Bristol say it has been mutually agreed that back-row forward Fisher will take time out to assess his playing career.

The 28-year-old joined Bristol from Northampton last summer.

"'Fish' has taken the decision to step back from playing," Bristol's acting head coach Mark Tainton told the club's official website.

"The welfare of our players is of utmost importance, and we support Jon's decision."

Fisher added: "The medical team at Bristol Rugby have been hugely supportive and professional throughout. This has been a difficult decision, but I believe it is a positive one.

"I've been fortunate enough to represent some fantastic clubs, playing alongside some great players and characters.

"In my experience of Bristol Rugby, although short-lived, the future is most certainly bright, and I wish all involved every success."
