ANTHONY WATSON: Took his two tries brilliantly, although profited from some feeble French defending for the first. 8
HENRY SLADE: A debut to remember for the Exeter Chief who passed with intelligence and kept several moves going. 8
SAM BURGESS: Made two big hits, carried well and only blotted his copybook with a naive yellow card. 7
JONNY MAY: Injected pace into the backline move that led to Watson's first try and also finished with one himself. 7
OWEN FARRELL: Started well but England lost direction in the final quarter and must take his share of the blame. 6
RICHARD WIGGLESWORTH: Neat and tidy and had a good understanding with Farrell, but Ben Youngs is still England's first choice scrum-half. 6
MAKO VUNIPOLA: Grew in stature as the match progressed and was a t his best in the second half when he carried and tackled hard. 6
ROB WEBBER: England's lack of experience at hooker will see him make the World Cup, but he was average on this night. 5
KIERAN BROOKES: Departed with a wrist injury in the second half but had been solid until then. 6
GEORGE KRUIS: Playing for his ongoing presence in the training squad but may be cut next week. 5
GEOFF PARLING: Anonymous display as England's engine room, usually a source of strength. Struggled. 5
TOM WOOD: Led England for the third time and revelled in the responsibility, tackling hard and throwing himself into the battle. 7
CALUM CLARK: The high work-rate and bravery were admirable but it will not be enough to secure his place at England 2015. 6
BEN MORGAN: Lasted a half in his first appearance since breaking his leg in January and will be pleased for the game time. 6
