Stuart Lancaster on Wednesday stepped down as head coach of England as the fallout from their humiliating World Cup campaign continues.

Having been appointed in 2012, Lancaster, 46, has paid the price for England's failure to get out of the World Cup pool stages following defeats to Wales and Australia.

Here are some of the reactions of people within the game on Twitter:

"Never nice to see someone step down from their job under those circumstances. Thought Stuart instilled a lot of good things into England. I'd like to thank him for allowing me to represent my country on 5 occasions and wish him well in the future." - Leicester and England fly-half Freddie Burns.

"Lancaster takes responsibility for RWC exit and stands down - always knew he was a honourable man." - Former England hooker Brian Moore.

"Should Stuart Lancaster still be England Rugby's Head Coach?" - Matt Dawson, a World Cup winner with England in 2003 and former British and Irish Lions scrum-half, conducts a yes/no poll in the minutes following the Rugby Football Union's announcement.

"Stuart Lancaster is a very good man. Feel gutted for him." - Former Bath and England prop David Flatman.

"Decent man SL, but inevitable after the Burgess fiasco that he would have to step down. I assume the other coaches will be shortly following" - Former Bath, Northampton and England wing Jon Sleightholme.
