SCOTLAND RATINGS

GREIG TONKS: Looked secure at the back as he dealt with a succession of high balls. 6

SEAN LAMONT: The veteran wing gave another dependable display. Nothing spectacular but always there to clean things up. 5

RICHIE VERNON: Should have put Tonks clear early on but overcooked his pass. Did not get too many chances to drive forward though. 5

MATT SCOTT: Showed he is nearly back to his best as he punched holes in the Italian defence. Set up Henry Pyrgos try with perfectly-timed pass. 7

RORY HUGHES: The Castlemilk-born wing could have marked his debut with a touchdown but fumbled a high Tonks kick. 6

DUNCAN WEIR: Making just his second start of the year and it showed with a series of erratic passes. Made amends with 11 points with his boot. 6

SAM HIDALGO-CLYNE: The Guinness Pro12 young player of the year was lucky to get away with a charged down kick just after the interval. 5

ADAM ASHE: Carried well but the Glasgow seldom seems to make much ground. 5

JOHN HARDIE: The latest Kilted Kiwi put in a tireless display as he tackled everything in sight. Impressive display before limping off with cramp. 7

ALASDAIR STROKOSCH: Took over the captaincy from sick skipper Grant Gilchrist and stepped up to the plate with a determined display. 7

JIM HAMILTON: Handed his chance to start in Gilchrist's absence and for once kept his nose clean. 6

RICHIE GRAY: The giant lock looked rusty against a poweful Azzurri pack. Might need another run out before the World Cup. 5

MIKE CUSACK: The English-born prop was handed his first start but found himself under pressure at the scrum. 5

STUART McINALLY: The hooker finally made his Test debut after a stomach bug ruled him out last week but looked over excited at times. 6

GORDON REID: Could not stop the Italians dominating the scrum. His World Cup hopes appear to be hanging by a thread. 5

Replacements:

ALASDAIR DICKINSON (for REID, 46): Steadied the scrum. 6

WILLIAM NEL (for CUSACK, 49): Looked assured on his debut. 6

ROSS FORD (for ROSS FORD, 53): Needs to improve in the loose. 5

HAMISH WATSON (for HARDIE, 55): Made a positive impact. 5

HENRY PYRGOS (for HIDALGO-CLYNE, 61): Popped up in the right place to finally get Scotland back to winning ways. 7

DAMIEN HOYLAND (for HUGHES, 62): Never saw enough of the ball. 4

PETER HORNE (for VERNE, 68): Made an impressive drive before playing a part in winning try. 7
